Gary Sanchez out with 3-4 weeks with Grade I groin strain

The Yankees will be without Gary Sanchez until after the All-Star break. Earlier today the team announced Sanchez has been placed on the 10-day DL with a right groin strain as expected, and this afternoon Aaron Boone confirmed Gary will miss 3-4 weeks with a Grade I strain. That’s a bummer, but, all things considered, this is probably the best case scenario.

Sanchez exited yesterday’s game with the injury after running out a double play ground ball. He had calf trouble earlier this year and a few weeks ago Boone indicated Gary’s been dealing with a shoulder issue as well. Now he has month to rest up and let everything heal. Sucks. Hopefully he comes back as strong as ever.

With Sanchez sidelined, the Yankees will go with Austin Romine as the starting catcher, and he’s been great so far this season. He also has fewer than 100 plate appearances and there is nothing in his track record to suggest what he’s done so far this season will last. Not much more we can do other than hope for the best.

Kyle Higashioka was called up to replace Sanchez on the roster and he’ll take over as the backup catcher, a role he held briefly when Sanchez was sidelined last April. Higashioka is 0-for-18 in the big leagues. Still looking for that first hit. Here are all today’s roster moves:

  • Sanchez placed on the 10-day DL with right groin strain.
  • Clint Frazier sent down to Triple-A Scranton.
  • Higashioka and Gio Gallegos recalled from Triple-A Scranton.

Sanchez going on the disabled list allowed the Yankees to recall Gallegos before his ten days in the minors were up. He was up as the 26th man in the one-and-a-half-header in Washington last week. The bullpen worked a lot in yesterday’s 12-inning game and the Yankees needed a fresh arm. My guess is Gallegos will be sent out for a position player fairly soon, maybe even tomorrow.

The Frazier demotion means two things. One, Chasen Shreve is sticking around, like or not. And two, the Yankees will roll with a three-man bench in a National League park for at least one night. The bench will be Higashioka, Neil Walker, and whichever one of the four regular outfielders isn’t starting. Tyler Austin, Tyler Wade, Brandon Drury, and Billy McKinney are all eligible to be called up while Ronald Torreyes can’t return until Thursday due to the ten-day rule. A 14-man pitching staff it is.

Games 68 & 69: Let’s Play One and a Half

Rather than enjoy an off-day, the Yankees are in Washington today to play a doubleheader against the Nationals. Except it’s not really a doubleheader. It’s a one-and-a-half-header. The Yankees and Nationals are completing their May 15th suspended game tonight, then, a half-hour after that, they’ll make up their May 16th rainout.

The suspended game is currently tied 3-3 in the middle of the sixth inning. The top of the sixth just ended, and, when they begin tonight, Bryce Harper will lead off the bottom of the sixth. Also, the Yankees technically don’t have a pitcher in the game! Brett Gardner pinch-hit for Masahiro Tanaka in the top of the sixth. Aaron Boone said this afternoon Chad Green will “start” the suspended game. Sixth inning of a tie game with the middle of the order due up? That’s a Chad Green situation all the way.

How did they get here? Tanaka allowed a solo homer to Anthony Rendon in the first inning and run-scoring hits to Andrew Stevenson and Pedro Severino in the second to put the Yankees in an early 3-0 hole. The Yankees stormed back thanks to Tyler Austin, who hit a two-run opposite field homer against Gio Gonzalez in the fourth, and a sac fly in the fifth to tie the game 3-3. Austin is in Triple-A and has been replaced in the lineup by Walker. Boone could’ve replaced him with Greg Bird, but chose not to. Kendrick is injured and Stevenson is in Triple-A, and I have no idea who is replacing them. Everyone on each team’s 25-man roster is eligible to play in the suspended game provided they were not removed from game already. Example: Gio Gonzalez started for the Nationals, was pinch-hit for by Moises Sierra, who was then replaced by Suero. Gonzalez and Sierra are no longer eligible to play in the suspended game. Also, there is no 26th man for the suspended game. Only tonight’s makeup game.

It is disgustingly hot and humid in Washington today. Real feel temperature is over 100° right now, and by the end of the night, it’s expected to get down into the low-90s. Gross. At least there’s no rain in the forecast. The suspended game will resume at 5:05pm ET and you can watch on YES locally and MLB Network out-of-market. The second game will begin 30 minutes after the suspended game ends, and that will also be on YES locally and MLB Network out-of-market. Enjoy the game and a half.

Injury Updates: Gardner is dealing with inflammation in his right knee and is day-to-day. He went for an MRI yesterday that came back clean, and he is expected to be available to pinch-hit in tonight’s game … Jacoby Ellsbury saw a back specialist last week and is getting ready to “ramp up” baseball activity. We’ll see.

Roster Move: Welcome back, Clint Frazier. Frazier has been called up and Ronald Torreyes has been sent down, the Yankees announced. Didn’t see that coming. I thought Clint would be the 26th man tonight, but he’ll be available for the suspended game as well. (He was on the original roster for the suspended game anyway.) With Gardner banged up, it makes sense to carry another outfielder for the time being … Gio Gallegos will be the 26th man tonight.

Update (6:42pm ET): The Yankees dropped the completion of the suspended game earlier this afternoon. Now here are the lineups for the makeup game tonight:

Game 46: End of the Road Trip

The eight-game turned six-and-a-half game road trip ends tonight with the series finale against the Rangers. A win tonight clinches a ninth straight series victory for the Yankees. They haven’t done that since 1998. A loss clinches their first series loss since dropping two of three at Fenway Park in early April. Been a while!

CC Sabathia is on the mound tonight and his last two starts haven’t gone well, though, to be fair, a brutal Gleyber Torres error really hurt Sabathia’s pitching line last time out. Would be nice to see the big man rebound and put together a strong start to close out the road trip. The pitching hasn’t been so hot the last few days. Here are the lineups:

Injury Update: Gary Sanchez (calf) is being held out of the lineup as a precaution more than anything. He left last night’s game with a cramp and is available today. I figured they’d sit him today with the off-day tomorrow. Gives him back-to-backs away from catching to knock this thing out.

Roster Move: Gio Gallegos has been sent to Triple-A Scranton and lefty Ryan Bollinger was called up from Double-A Trenton to be the long man, the Yankees announced. They signed Bollinger as a free agent over the winter. He’ll be making his MLB debut. Bollinger has been bouncing around independent leagues the last few years and most recently pitched in Germany. Pretty cool that he reached the show, even as an emergency arm. (The Yankees had an open 40-man roster spot after dumping David Hale last week. No other move was required for Bollinger.)

DotF: Bird, McKinney begin rehab assignments in Tampa’s loss

Two quick injury notes:

  • SS Thairo Estrada, who was placed on the disabled list yesterday, is out with a wrist issue, Triple-A Scranton manager Bobby Mitchell told DJ Eberle. So there you go. Tough year for Estrada so far. He’s had wrist and groin problems in addition to the whole getting shot thing.
  • RHP Gio Gallegos was activated off the Triple-A Scranton disabled list, the team announced. He’d been out with groin and back trouble.

The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders were rained out. They’re going to play a doubleheader tomorrow. Brandon Drury’s rehab was moved back here because Trenton is out on the road, so he lost out on a rehab game tonight. He’ll (probably) play two tomorrow instead.

Double-A Trenton Thunder (3-1 loss to Richmond, walk-off style)

DotF: Sheffield and Stephan dominate again in wins

Three quick notes:

  • In case you missed it earlier, the Yankees have re-signed RHP David Hale to a new minor league contract. He’s heading back to Triple-A Scranton. OF Cody Asche was released to open up a roster spot, the team announced.
  • OF Mark Payton is progressing well following knee surgery, RailRiders manager Bobby Mitchell told Conor Foley. Payton needed knee surgery in Spring Training. He’s about three weeks away from returning.
  • RHP Gio Gallegos is now dealing with low back tightness, Mitchell told Brendan Kuty. Gallegos was initially placed on the disabled list with a groin issue. Now his back is acting up.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (7-1 win over Buffalo)

  • CF Tyler Wade: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — notable that he’s playing center field … the Yankees are having him work to increase his versatility again
  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • 3B Brandon Drury: 0-3, 1 R, 1 RBI — Mitchell told Kuty it is unrealistic to expect Drury to be ready to return by Friday … Drury’s 20-day rehab window doesn’t expire until May 14th, so there’s no rush to get him back soon
  • DH Kyle Higashioka: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K — had been in an 0-for-13 skid
  • LF Clint Frazier: 0-4, 2 K — his rehab has been moved up here from Tampa
  • LHP Daniel Camarena: 7 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 8/4 GB/FB — 53 of 80 pitches were strikes (66%), plus he picked a runner off second base
  • RHP Brady Lail: 2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 21 of 31 pitches were strikes (68%) … 23/3 K/BB in his last 11.1 innings

DotF: Jackson homers again in Trenton’s win

In case you missed it earlier, the Yankees are calling up IF Gleyber Torres. He’s set to join the team tomorrow. Fun! Here are some other quick notes:

  • Sounds like OF Clint Frazier (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment Monday, according to his Twitter feed. That isn’t confirmed though. He’s been playing in simulated games and Aaron Boone recently said Frazier is very close to rehab games, so there you do.
  • RHP Gio Gallegos (groin) is in Tampa and will resume throwing “pretty quick here,” Triple-A Scranton manager Bobby Mitchell told DJ Eberle. The Yankees are running short on healthy pitchers. The sooner Gallegos comes back, the better.
  • RHP Anyelo Gomez (shoulder) went through defensive drills today according to Eberle, which is a good indication his injury is not serious. Again, the Yankees are running short on healthy arms. The sooner Gomez returns, the better.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (6-5 loss to Toledo)

  • OF Shane Robinson: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 1 E (throwing)
  • 2B Gleyber Torres: 0-3 — got his three at-bats, then was pulled from the game … final minor league game of his career?
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — six walks and seven strikeouts in eleven games
  • 1B Mike Ford: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — his great season continues
  • RHP Brody Koerner: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 9/5 GB/FB — 52 of 79 pitches were strikes (66%) … allowed all six runs in the second, then settled down and was able to soak up some innings

DotF: Sensley’s big game helps Charleston to blowout win

Got a couple notes to pass along, including an OF Aaron Hicks rehab update:

  • Hicks has joined Triple-A Scranton to begin a rehab assignment, as scheduled. DJ Eberle says Hicks worked out with the RailRiders today and is scheduled to play five innings in center field tomorrow, then a full nine innings in center field Wednesday. Based on that, Hicks won’t return to the Yankees until Thursday at the earliest.
  • IF Gleyber Torres, who was slated to split time 50-50 between second and short this year, will now focus on second and third bases according to Eberle. With 3B Brandon Drury out, it seems the Yankees want Torres to be ready to play third in case something happens to 3B Miguel Andujar.
  • Three players were placed on the minor league disabled list today: RHP Gio Gallegos, LHP JP Sears, and OF Dom Thompson-Williams. No idea what’s wrong with them, though I assume Gallegos’ groin issue flared back up. OF Rashad Crawford was moved up from Double-A Trenton to Triple-A Scranton in a corresponding move.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barres RailRiders (5-3 win over Lehigh Valley)

  • 2B Gleyber Torres: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 K — 6-for-14 (.429) in his last three games … here’s video of the triple (notice the feet first slide) … he scored on a sacrifice fly after the triple and Conor Foley says Torres slid feet first on that too … guessing he was given instructions to avoid head first slides after the injury last year
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — two homers, four walks, and one strikeout in three games so far
  • 1B Mike Ford: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 2 K
  • CF Rashad Crawford: 0-3 — Triple-A debut
  • LHP Daniel Camarena: 4.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3/4 GB/FB — 43 of 72 pitches were strikes (60%) … back with the Yankees after spending Spring Training with the Cubs, similar to Caleb Smith last season
