2014 Draft: Yankees sign eighth rounder 1B Connor Spencer
Kuroda, bullpen protect the early lead in 5-3 win over Blue Jays

In case you missed it earlier, RHP Preston Claiborne has been placed on the Triple-A DL with a shoulder injury. He is essentially the team’s eighth reliever at the moment, the guy they call up with they need a fresh arm.

Triple-A Scranton was rained out. They will make this game up as part of a doubleheader on July 10th.

Double-A Trenton (7-3 loss to Bowie)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 K — threw a runner out at third
  • C Gary Sanchez: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 PB — 12-for-28 (.429) in his last seven games
  • 1B Peter O’Brien: 0-4
  • RF Tyler Austin: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • LHP Eric Wooten: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 8/3 GB/FB — 59 of 87 pitches were strikes (68%)
  • RHP Nick Goody: 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 11 of 18 pitches were strikes (61%)

High-A Tampa (9-3 win over Clearwater)

  • CF Jake Cave: 5-6, 2 R — second five-hit game of the season … 19-for-51 (.373) in his last 12 games
  • 1B Greg Bird: 3-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K — 15-for-33 (.455) with seven doubles in his last nine games
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 1-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • RF Aaron Judge: 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K — threw a runner out at first as part of a double play … 6-for-24 (.250) with a double, two triples, six walks, and six strikeouts in seven games since the promotion
  • RHP Luis Severino: 6 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 BB, 6 K, 8/1 GB/FB — I guess someone’s excited about going to the Futures Game, huh? … 84/17 K/BB in 78.1 innings this year

Low-A Charleston (4-0 loss to Savannah)

  • RF Michael O’Neill: 0-3, 1 K
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-4, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • CF Dustin Fowler: 0-1 — left the game in the third inning for an unknown reason … he grounded out in his only at-bat in the first
  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-3, 1 K
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 2-3, 1 E (throwing) — 19th error in 67 games in the field
  • LHP Chaz Hebert: 5 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 2 WP, 5/2 GB/FB — 56 of 88 pitches were strikes (64%)

Short Season Staten Island (9-0 win over Hudson Valley) they’ve thrown 24 consecutive scoreless innings

  • CF Devyn Bolasky: 1-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI
  • LF Chris Breen & RF Austin Aune: both 0-4 — Breen struck out once, Aune thrice
  • DH Nathan Mikolas: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 R
  • C Isaias Tejeda: 2-3, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 PB
  • LHP Justin Kamplain: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3/1 GB/FB
  • RHP Sam Agnew-Wieland: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 3/4 GB/FB
  • RHP Manolo Reyes: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1/0 GB/FB — he’s got a big arm and is already 24 after signing late (had to serve a one-year suspension for identity falsification), so he should move up the ladder quickly

Rookie GCL Yanks1 (5-0 win over GCL Blue Jays)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 SB — slow day at the office
  • C Luis Torrens: 0-3, 1 K — caught seven innings as he works his way back from that shoulder issue
  • DH Leonardo Molina: 0-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K — 2-for-17 (.118) with six walks and six strikeouts in his first five pro games
  • RF Alex Palma: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Joe Harvey: 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0/1 GB/FB — second outing for this year’s 19th rounder
  • LHP Orby Taveras: 3.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2/2 GB/FB — Orby Taveras is the most GCL name ever … the 19-year-old signed for $50k last summer

Rookie GCL Yanks2 (7-5 loss to GCL Astros)

  • 2B Junior Valera: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
  • DH Angel Aguilar: 0-5, 2 K
  • LF Frank Frias: 3-4, 1 R, 1 K — just keeps hitting and I just keep resisting the urge to call him Frankie Frias
  • RF Wilmer Romero: 0-3, 1 BB
  • RHP Jordan Foley: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 3/2 GB/FB
  • LHP Carlos Diaz: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 1 Balk, 1/0 GB/FB — signed for $100k in March 2012, then got suspended 50-games for a banned substance
