DotF: Good games from Judge and Refsnyder not enough in Scranton’s loss

Game 84: The Return of Ellsbury and Miller
Teixeira's two homers carry Yankees to 5-4 win over A's

Two quick roster moves. Well, I guess it’s really three:

  • OF Tyler Austin was activated off the Triple-A Scranton DL, according to Donnie Collins. It was a short two-week stint. Not sure what was wrong with him. RHP Jaron Long was sent down to Double-A Trenton to clear a roster spot. Triple-A has not been kind to the former hitting coach’s hit.
  • OF Brandon Thomas has been released, reports Nick Flammia. Thomas was the team’s eighth round pick in 2013, one year after being a fourth round pick by the Pirates. He fell in the draft because he had mono his senior year at Georgia Tech and was never at full strength. Thomas hit .209/.308/.317 in exactly 200 minor league games.

Triple-A Scranton (6-4 loss to Syracuse in 12 innings)

  • CF Ben Gamel: 2-6, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 SB
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 2-6
  • DH Aaron Judge: 2-4, 2 BB, 1 K
  • RF Tyler Austin: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HBP, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Kyle Davies: 6 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 8/7 GB/FB — 53 of 89 pitches were strikes (60%)
  • RHP Nick Goody: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0/1 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — 26 of 32 pitches were strikes (81%) in his Triple-A debut … 63/14 K/BB in 41.2 innings
  • LHP James Pazos: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 22 of 42 pitches were strikes (52%)
  • RHP Jose Ramirez: 0.1 IP, zeroes, 0/1 GB/FB — four pitches, three strikes

Double-A Trenton (7-3 loss to New Hampshire)

  • CF Mark Payton: 1-4, 1 K
  • C Gary Sanchez: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K — snaps his four-game homer streak
  • RHP Kyle Haynes: 6 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1/2 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) — 63 of 95 pitches were strikes (66%)
  • RHP Johnny Barbato: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — nine pitches, six strikes … 36/14 K/BB in 39 innings
  • RHP Andrew Bailey: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 11 of 14 pitches were strikes (79%) … no room for him in the bullpen right now, but at least he’s healthy

High-A Tampa (10-2 loss to Brevard County)

  • SS Tyler Wade: 2-4, 1 BB — seven walks and one strikeout in his last ten games
  • 2B Abi Avelino: 3-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K — 6-for-14 (.429) after a 3-for-39 (.077) slump
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-4, 1 K
  • RHP Vicente Campos: 1.2 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 30 of 50 pitches were strikes … not good! but the return from Tommy John surgery is rarely a smooth road

Low-A Charleston (2-0 loss to Kannapolis)

  • SS Jorge Mateo: 1-4, 1 2B — four of his last seven hits have been doubles
  • CF Austin Aune: 0-4, 4 K — the bad version of Aune
  • 2B Angel Aguilar: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB, 1 K — his bat is starting to come around a bit
  • RF Alex Palma: 0-4, 2 K
  • LHP Rony Bautista: 5.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 7 BB, 5 K, 7/4 GB/FB — 46 of 86 pitches were strikes (53%) … 62/40 K/BB in 60.1 innings

Short Season Staten Island (5-3 win over Aberdeen)

  • CF Jeff Hendrix: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP — got picked off first
  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-4, 1 K — this year’s supplemental first rounder hasn’t exactly gotten off to a hot start as a pro
  • 2B Thairo Estrada: 1-4, 1 R
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 2-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 HBP — “Jhalan jacked one!” is what we’ll hear John Sterling yelling in about four years, right?
  • RHP Matt Borens: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 6/2 GB/FB — 56 of 79 pitches were strikes (71%)
  • RHP Chance Adams: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/3 GB/FB — 25 of 41 pitches were strikes (61%) … 13/3 K/BB in 9.2 innings for this year’s fifth rounder

Rookie level Pulaski (6-3 win over Princeton) that’s Princeton, West Virginia, not New Jersey

  • CF Carlos Vidal: 1-6, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 1 E (pickoff)
  • SS Hyo-Jun Park: 1-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 E (throwing) — 13-for-40 (.325) during his ten-game hit streak
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-5, 2 K
  • RHP Simon De La Rosa: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 4/1 GB/FB — 19/9 K/BB in 13.2 innings

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 Game One (13-7 loss to GCL Phillies) completion of the June 23rd game, which was suspended due to rain in the fourth inning

  • SS Danienger Perez: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — tripled in the original game, doubled today
  • RF Leonardo Molina: 2-5, 2 RBI — one hit in the original game, one hit today
  • CF Trey Amburgey: 2-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 SB — both walks came in the original game, both hits today
  • RHP Alex Vargas: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 6/2 GB/FB — he started the original game two weeks ago
  • RHP Abel Duarte: 3.1 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 1 Balk, 5/2 GB/FB

Rookie level GCL Yanks1 Game Two (1-0 loss to Phillies in seven innings)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 1-3, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • CF Leonardo Molina: 1-2 — got picked off first
  • 3B Donny Sands: 0-3, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Jean Ramirez: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1 Balk, 5/4 GB/FB

Rookie level GCL Yanks2 (2-1 win over GCL Braves)

  • SS Yancarlos Baez: 1-4, 1 K, 1 SB
  • 2B Griffin Garabito: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding)
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 0-4, 1 K — right field, not first base! … he played the outfield in junior college but the Yankees announced him as a first baseman at the draft and most think he’ll wind up there long-term
  • RHP Gilmael Troya: 5 IP, 2 H 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 4/4 GB/FB
