Five things we've learned about the Yankees one week into the 2017 season

Random note from Brendan Kuty: C Radley Haddad, who traveled with the Yankees a bunch of times as an extra player this spring, is now with the big league team full-time as one of the two bullpen catchers. Jason Brown is the other bullpen catcher. He was on the Triple-A Scranton coaching staff last season and spend time in the farm system as a player in the mid-2000s. Longtime bullpen catcher Ramon Rodriguez left the Yankees to become a scout with the Angels over the winter.

Triple-A Scranton (2-0 win over Lehigh Valley)

  • 2B Tyler Wade: 2-4, 1 K — he’s 7-for-15 (.467) so far and has hit safely in all four games
  • LF Clint Frazier: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K
  • DH Dustin Fowler: 0-4, 1 K
  • RF Rob Refsnyder: 0-3, 1 K
  • CF Mason Williams: 0-2
  • RHP Luis Cessa: 7 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 9/2 GB/FB — 60 of 82 pitches were strikes (73%) … he took a comebacker to the calf but was able to stay in the game … LHP Jordan Montgomery will start for the big league team Wednesday, and it’s only a matter of time until Cessa gets an opportunity to start in the Bronx this year as well
  • RHP Ben Heller: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1/0 GB/FB — ten of 16 pitches were strikes (63%) … nice bounceback after giving up the walk-off homer yesterday
  • RHP Ernesto Frieri: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB — eleven of 16 pitches were strikes (69%)

Double-A Trenton (7-3 loss to Akron)

  • CF Rashad Crawford: 0-4, 1 K
  • 2B Thairo Estrada & SS Gleyber Torres: both 1-3, 1 BB — they’ve combined for seven walks and three strikeouts through four games
  • 1B Mike Ford: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 0-4, 1 K, 2 E (throwing, fielding) — alternating great days with bad days in the early going
  • RHP Domingo German: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 54 of 81 pitches were strikes (67%) … struck out a rehabbing Jason Kipnis three times … this was German’s Double-A debut, which is something I’m sure the Yankees would have liked him to do back in 2015, but Tommy John surgery got in the way

High-A Tampa (4-3 win over Fort Myers in 13 innings, walk-off style) they played 16 innings Saturday, now 13 innings tonight

  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-6, 1 K
  • 2B Nick Solak: 3-6, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — came into this game 1-for-17 (.059) on the season
  • DH Tito Polo: 1-5, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 CS — went 3-for-4 on Opening Day and has gone 3-for-17 (.176) since
  • CF Trey Amburgey: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • 1B Mandy Alvarez: 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — walk-off single
  • 3B Abi Avelino: 1-5, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Zack Littell: 4 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 7/2 GB/FB — 53 of 84 pitches were strikes (63%) … organizational debut for the guy the Yankees got from the Mariners for James Pazos
  • RHP Josh Roeder: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 26 of 32 pitches were strikes (81%)
  • RHP Christian Morris: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 7/2 GB/FB — 34 of 47 pitches were strikes (72%)

Low-A Charleston (9-8 win over Augusta, walk-off style)

  • SS Hoy Jun Park: 1-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K, 2 E (both fielding)
  • 2B Diego Castillo: 2-4, 3 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB — scored the winning run on a walk-off wild pitch
  • CF Blake Rutherford: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K — five walks and five strikeouts in five games
  • DH Angel Aguilar: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB — got picked off first
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 1-3, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • C Donny Sands: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HBP
  • 3B Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • LF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI — threw a runner out at the plate
  • RHP Nick Nelson: 4 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 7/0 GB/FB — 51 of 75 pitches were strikes (68%), plus he picked a runner off first … not a good season debut for last year’s fourth rounder, but I’m looking forward to seeing what he does this year … he’s got a pretty nice arm
