Yankees to call up Gleyber Torres on Sunday
Middle Infield Musings

In case you missed it earlier, the Yankees are calling up IF Gleyber Torres. He’s set to join the team tomorrow. Fun! Here are some other quick notes:

  • Sounds like OF Clint Frazier (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment Monday, according to his Twitter feed. That isn’t confirmed though. He’s been playing in simulated games and Aaron Boone recently said Frazier is very close to rehab games, so there you do.
  • RHP Gio Gallegos (groin) is in Tampa and will resume throwing “pretty quick here,” Triple-A Scranton manager Bobby Mitchell told DJ Eberle. The Yankees are running short on healthy pitchers. The sooner Gallegos comes back, the better.
  • RHP Anyelo Gomez (shoulder) went through defensive drills today according to Eberle, which is a good indication his injury is not serious. Again, the Yankees are running short on healthy arms. The sooner Gomez returns, the better.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (6-5 loss to Toledo)

  • OF Shane Robinson: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 SB, 1 E (throwing)
  • 2B Gleyber Torres: 0-3 — got his three at-bats, then was pulled from the game … final minor league game of his career?
  • C Kyle Higashioka: 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — six walks and seven strikeouts in eleven games
  • 1B Mike Ford: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB
  • SS Abi Avelino: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 SB — his great season continues
  • RHP Brody Koerner: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 9/5 GB/FB — 52 of 79 pitches were strikes (66%) … allowed all six runs in the second, then settled down and was able to soak up some innings
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2/3 GB/FB — 22 of 47 pitches were strikes (47%)

Double-A Trenton Thunder (3-1 win over Portland)

  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 0-4, 2 K
  • CF Trey Amburgey: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B
  • RF Jhalan Jackson: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — 8-for-50 (.160) with one double, one triple, and six homers so far this season
  • RHP Will Carter: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 8/1 GB/FB — 25 of 42 pitches were strikes (60%) … 17/6 K/BB in 14 innings for the sinker specialist

High-A Tampa Tarpons (7-3 loss to Clearwater)

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 0-4, 1 RBI, 2 K — 4-for-17 (.235) with an un-Thairo-like six strikeouts in four rehab games so far … I wonder if he’ll get moved up to Scranton to take Gleyber’s spot
  • LF Estevan Florial: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB — three straight games with a stolen base
  • 3B Brandon Wagner: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K — already his third game at third base this season … he played first base exclusively last year … Wagner was drafted as a third baseman, and I guess the Yankees are going to give it another try this year to see if he can hack it over there
  • DH Isiah Gilliam: 0-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • 2B Diego Castillo: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • CF Pablo Olivares: 0-3
  • RHP Mike King: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 1 Balk, 7/0 GB/FB — 59 of 91 pitches were strikes (65%) … had three walks total in his first two starts and 12 innings
  • LHP Trevor Lane: 1.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 HR, 2/0 GB/FB — 20 of 25 pitches were strikes

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (4-2 win over Greensboro)

  • SS Wilkerman Garcia: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SB, 1 CS, 1 E (throwing) — he really filled up the box score, huh? … those are his first extra-base hits of the season
  • 2B Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-5, 1 2B, 1 RBI
  • RF Steven Sensley: 0-5, 1 K — 2-for-17 (.118) with nine strikeouts in his last five games
  • CF Leonardo Molina: 1-3, 1 BB
  • LHP JP Sears: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 34 of 52 pitches were strikes (66%) … first start back from the disabled list and an unknown injury
