Rays 4, Yankees 0: Back-to-back losses for the first time in a month
Evaluating Happ and Hamels

The Yankees have signed OF Mitchell Hansen, according to his Instagram account. The Dodgers released him a few days ago. He hit .256/.321/.409 (91 wRC+) in 254 minor league games after being their second round pick in 2015. Baseball America (subs. req’d) ranked Hansen as the No. 28 prospect in the Dodgers’ system before the season and says he has a “lefty swing with good leverage” that creates “good bat speed and average raw power.”

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (4-2 win over Rochester)

  • CF Tyler Wade: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
  • 1B Tyler Austin: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 3 K — 7-for-23 (.304) with three doubles, two homers, and ten strikeouts in six games since being sent down
  • DH Brandon Drury: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — here’s video of the dinger
  • RF Billy McKinney: 1-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 K — threw a runner out at the plate
  • SS Ronald Torreyes: 2-4, 1 R
  • LHP Nestor Cortes: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 5/3 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing) — 64 of 91 pitches were strikes (70%)

  • RHP Cody Carroll: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0-1 GB/FB — nine pitches, seven strikes … he’s pitched three times in the last four days now, which is not a typical Triple-A relief prospect workload … that’s a “we want to see how he handles it before we call him up” workload … either that or manager Bobby Mitchell has gone rogue and is using Carroll against organizational directives (nah)

  • SS-2B Gosuke Katoh: 3-5, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 1B Ryan McBroom: 3-5, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 E (throwing) — hitting .307/.336/.482 on the season

  • DH Brandon Wagner: 1-2, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • LF Isiah Gilliam: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K — he took a reliever deep, not Guzman … 23-for-65 (.354) with three doubles and three homers during his 16-game hitting streak … 27.7 K% and 4.0 BB% this year after 21.7 K% and 10.8 BB% last year

  • RHP Garrett Whitlock: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 11 K, 1 WP, 4/2 GB/FB — 57 of 87 pitches were strikes (66%) … new career high in strikeouts and his best start in an excellent season … 1.41 ERA and 81/15 K/BB in 70 innings so far this year
