DotF: Garcia goes deep, Otto returns in Tampa’s win

Game Eight: Beat the Birds
Yankees 6, Orioles 4: Frazier's late home run helps Yankees overcome way too many mistakes

I forgot to link to this yesterday, but here’s video of RHP Clarke Schmidt’s nine strikeouts from Opening Day. He threw five innings and did not allow a hit or a walk, though there were two errors made behind him, so it wasn’t a perfect outing.

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (10-8 loss to Buffalo)

  • RF Trey Amburgey: 4-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI — 8-for-14 (.571) with two doubles in his first three Triple-A games
  • 1B Mike Ford: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding)
  • DH Ryan McBroom: 0-5, 2 K
  • C Ryan Lavarnway: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — first Triple-A hit is his first Triple-A homer
  • RHP Chance Adams: 3 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 2 HR, 4/2 GB/FB — 41 of 80 pitches were strikes (51%) … not a good start to year three in Triple-A
  • LHP Rex Brothers: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1/1 GB/FB, 1 E (pickoff) — 24 of 41 pitches were strikes (59%) … he’s my pick for the “random minor league signing who makes 10+ appearances for the MLB team” player

Double-A Trenton Thunder (3-2 win over Erie in eleven innings)

  • SS Kyle Holder: 0-5, 1 K
  • 1B Brandon Wagner: 0-2, 2 BB — sporting a .000/.375/.000 line in the early going
  • RF Rashad Crawford: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
  • RHP Brody Koerner: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1/6 GB/FB — 43 of 75 pitches were strikes (57%) … he’s in the rotation until RHP Nick Green gets all the way stretched out (I think)
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 2 IP, zeroes, 3 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 14 of 19 pitches were strikes (74%) … and thus begins life as a full-time reliever … he’s going to pitch on a set schedule (two innings every three days is pretty common) for at least a little while, until he gets familiar with the role
  • RHP Daniel Alvarez: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 18 of 30 pitches were strikes (60%) … I thought he looked pretty interesting in his televised Grapefruit League appearance, so I’m going to keep an eye on him this year

High-A Tampa Tarpons (12-9 win over Lakeland)

  • SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • DH Isiah Gilliam: 0-2, 2 R, 1 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
  • 1B Dermis Garcia: 3-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — 5-for-12 (.417) with a double and a homer in the early going
  • C Donny Sands: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K, 1 PB
  • RHP Glenn Otto: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 WP, 2/2 GB/FB — 45 of 70 pitches were strikes (64%) … the 2017 fifth rounder made only two starts last season before having season-ending surgery to remove a blood clot from his shoulder … he’s healthy now and definitely someone to watch going forward
  • LHP Anderson Severino: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 3/0 GB/FB — 21 of 41 pitches were strikes (51%) … this little lefty (5-foot-10 and 165 lbs.) was throwing 99-100 mph in Spring Training
  • RHP Jefry Valdez: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 25 of 44 pitches were strikes (57%) … organizational depth after coming over from the Rockies in a minor trade over the winter

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (3-2 loss to Columbia)

  • LF Brandon Lockridge: 0-4, 1 K — last year’s fifth rounder is 0-for-12 with six strikeouts in the early going
  • CF Isaiah Pasteur: 2-3, 1 R, 1 CS, 1 HBP
  • DH Josh Stowers: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 CS — here’s video of his two doubles last night
  • RHP Tanner Myatt: 4 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 3/3 GB/FB — 38 of 67 pitches were strikes (57%) … he’s a personal favorite, but a 6-foot-7 20-year-old who throws 99-101 is doing to have plenty of BB > K nights along the way
  • RHP Jio Orozco: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 1 WP, 4/3 GB/FB — 45 of 75 pitches were strikes (60%) … lots of piggybacking so far this year and that’s because the Yankees have so many legitimate pitching prospects in the low minors … eventually guys will get hurt or traded to clear up the logjam (don’t get mad at me, that’s just baseball), but, right now, the Yankees have more pitching prospects than rotation spots

The Short Season Staten Island Yankees, Rookie Pulaski Yankees, and two Rookie Gulf Coast League Yankees teams begin play in June.
