Yankees call up Matt Daley, place Corban Joseph on 60-day DL

September 6, 2013 by Mike 3 Comments

The Yankees have called up right-hander Matt Daley from Triple-A Scranton, the team announced. To make room on the 40-man roster, Corban Joseph was called up and placed on the 60-day DL. His season ended in May due to a shoulder problem. The move was made to add bullpen depth for the rest of the season and tonight’s game in particular.

Daley, 31, missed most of 2011 and all of 2012 following shoulder surgery. The Queens native had a 2.02 ERA and ~1.65 FIP in 53.1 relief innings across three minor league levels while coming back from the injury this year. He spent parts of three seasons in the big leagues with the Rockies, pitching to a 4.71 ERA and 3.86 FIP in 80.1 total innings from 2009-2011. Daley is a soft-tosser in the Cory Wade mold, not a guy who will come in and blow people away. He’s been in the organization for two years now and there’s a chance he could factor into the 2014 bullpen plans.

Minor League Links: Daley, Warren, Stoneburner

The Arizona Fall League season begins next week, so minor league baseball will resume soon enough. Until then, here is a collection of news and motes from the bush leagues…

  • Via Matt Eddy, the Yankees have re-signed RHP Matt Daley. They originally signed the Queens-born reliever last December, but he missed the entire season rehabbing his shoulder after having rotator cuff surgery last August. Daley, 30, had a decent three-year run as an up-and-down arm for the Rockies from 2008-2010, pitching to a 4.71 ERA (3.86 FIP) in 80.1 innings.
  • Also via Eddy, the Yankees have signed LHP Abel Mora. The Padres released the 20-year-old Manhattan native in May. Mora posted a 52/22 K/BB in 54.1 innings down in the Dominican Summer League last year, though I can’t seem to find much else about him. I suppose there’s a chance he’s something more than filler given his age and left-handedness, however.
  • RHP Adam Warren won the Minor League Gold Glove Award for pitchers. There is just one award at each position for the entire minor leagues, so this isn’t one of those things they break up by level or league. Congrats to Warren.
  • Marc Hulet of FanGraphs posted a recap of Double-A Trenton players he saw late in the season, including OF Zoilo Almonte, OF Ramon Flores, RHP Mark Montgomery, and LHP Nik Turley. The player who received the highest praise is a former personal fave who has missed lots of time due to injury in recent years, RHP Graham Stoneburner. He’s Rule 5 Draft eligible this winter and Hulet likes his potential as a reliever because his fastball runs all over the place and he’s aggressive on the mound. Make sure you check it out.

Yankees add Matt Daley and Gus Molina on minor league deals

December 16, 2011 by Mike 19 Comments

Via Josh Norris and Baseball America, the Yankees have signed right-handed reliever Matt Daley to a minor league contract. The 29-year-old was born in Queens and raised out on Long Island, and he’s currently rehabbing from an August surgery on his rotator cuff. Prior to the injury, he used three pitches (high-80’s fastball, high-70’s change, mid-70’s curve) to get a fair amount of strikeouts (8.96 K/9), limit walks (3.36 BB/9), give up fly balls (33.8% grounders), and watch the ball fly out of the park (1.01 HR/9). Daley has appeared in 92 games and thrown 80.2 IP for the Rockies over the last three seasons, and he does have a funky little delivery you can see here. He’s a warm body for Triple-A, mostly.

In other news, the Yankees have also re-signed Gus Molina to a minor league pact. He’ll offer Austin Romine some nice veteran presents as his backup with Triple-A Scranton. The Yankees were suffering from a severe shortage of Guses in their farm system, so this clears that up.
