DotF: Sheffield debuts, Abreu strikes out eleven in wins

Here are the day’s notes:

Brian Cashman discussed RHP James Kaprielian’s injury following today’s game. The video is above. Cashman acknowledged surgery is on the table and Kaprielian will take a day or two to decide on the next step. It’s the same injury as last year, so the rehab essentially failed. Sucks.
Matt Eddy compiled a list of every player to begin the season on the minor league disabled list. There are no real surprises for the Yankees. RHP Austin DeCarr came back from Tommy John surgery last year, threw 39.1 innings, and is now hurt again. Not sure what’s wrong with him this time around, but a disabled list stint is ominous.

Triple-A Scranton (10-6 win over Lehigh Valley)

SS Tyler Wade: 4-5, 1 RBI, 1 K — off to an 11-for-20 (.550) start … he’s yet to play a position other than shortstop
LF Clint Frazier: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 HBP
CF Dustin Fowler: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
1B Rob Refsnyder: 0-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K — oh Ref
RF Mark Payton: 3-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
2B Ruben Tejada: 1-2, 3 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 1 K — quietly off to a 5-for-12 (.417) start with six walks and one strikeout
RHP Brady Lail: 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 5/3 GB/FB — 53 of 83 pitches were strikes (64%) … Triple-A has never been kind to him
LHP Tyler Webb: 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 5/0 GB/FB — 28 of 39 pitches were strikes (72%) … nice bounceback outing after allowing six runs in one inning in his season debut
RHP Ernesto Frieri: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 1/1 GB/FB — six pitches, six strikes

Double-A Trenton (9-3 win over Akron)

CF Rashad Crawford: 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding) — came into the game 1-for-14 (.071) on the young season
SS Gleyber Torres: 2-5, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI
3B Miguel Andujar: 1-3, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 E (fielding) — five of his eight hits have gone for extra bases (two doubles, two homers, one triple)
RF Billy McKinney: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
LHP Justus Sheffield: 5.2 IP 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 6/1 GB/FB — 58 of 86 pitches were strikes (67%) … very nice season debut … the batter he plunked? a rehabbing Jason Kipnis, who left the game after taking the pitch to the hand (d’oh)

High-A Tampa (3-2 win over Fort Myers, walk-off style)

CF Jorge Mateo: 1-4, 1 SB, 1 CS — he’s now 6-for-7 in steal attempts through six games … back-to-back games in center field
SS Kyle Holder: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 K — off to a 1-for-23 (.043) start, but the one is a homer
LF Trey Amburgey: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K
2B Nick Solak: 1-4, 1 RBI — walk-off single
RF Austin Aune: 0-3, 2 K
DH Jhalan Jackson: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — he’s 4-for-24 (.167) with eleven strikeouts so far
3B Abi Avelino: 0-3, 1 K
RHP Taylor Widener: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 6/7 GB/FB — 58 of 79 pitches were strikes (73%) … so far, so good for the converted reliever

Low-A Charleston (4-0 win over Augusta)

2B Diego Castillo &CF Leonardo Molina: both 0-4 — Molina struck out
DH Hoy Jun Park: 2-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB — two homers in six games this year … he hit two homers in 116 games at this level last year
3B Angel Aguilar: 3-4, 1 2B — got picked off first
1B Isiah Gilliam: 0-4, 1 K — he played first base and the outfielder in junior college … the Yankees have had him focus on the outfield in pro ball, but this is his second game at first this year
RF Estevan Florial: 1-4, 1 R, 3 K
SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 1-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
RHP Albert Abreu: 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 11 K, 4/1 GB/FB — 61 of 83 pitches were strikes (73%) … that’s a new career high in strikeouts for the headliner in the Brian McCann trade … with Kaprielian’s elbow acting up, odds are pretty high Abreu will be the top right-handed pitching prospect in the system by the end of the year
RHP Adonis Rosa: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 33 of 46 pitches were strikes (72%) … eleven strikeouts and no walks in eight innings so far
