DotF: Torreyes returns, Gleyber continues rehab in Tampa loss

July 23, 2018 by Mike Leave a Comment

Game 98: A Quick Trip to Tampa
Yankees 6, Rays 7: Missed opportunities galore at the Trop

The Yankees have announced a few roster moves:

  • IF Ronald Torreyes has been activated off the Triple-A Scranton temporary inactive list and sent to High-A Tampa. He’d been away from the team since June 26th because he went home to be with his wife, who had a medical issue. Now he’s back and going to Tampa for what amounts to a rehab assignment. Glad Mrs. Toe is apparently doing okay.
  • 1B Brandon Wagner has been promoted from High-A Tampa to Double-A Trenton. Wagner hit .270/.376/.510 (154 wRC+) with a farm system leading 20 homers in 87 games for Tampa. Nearly 5,000 players have played in the minors this season and only 18 have more homers than Wagner. Thirteen of the 18 are older than him.
  • C Keith Skinner has voluntarily retired. He was the team’s seventh round pick in 2016. Skinner hit .218/.298/.267 (68 wRC+) in 72 career minor league games.

The Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders had a scheduled off-day.

Double-A Trenton Thunder (4-0 loss to Hartford)

  • CF Trey Amburgey: 0-4, 1 K
  • DH Gosuke Katoh: 0-4, 3 K
  • 1B Ryan McBroom: 2-3, 1 BB, 1 K — 6-for-15 (.400) in four games since being sent back down from Scranton
  • SS Kyle Holder: 1-4
  • RHP Domingo Acevedo: 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 5/7 GB/FB — 61 of 86 pitches were strikes (71%) … strikeouts are still down quite a bit from his career norm, though he’s starting to string together some really good starts, so that’s good

High-A Tampa Tarpons (7-4 loss to Bradenton)

  • CF Estevan Florial: 1-5 — 3-for-19 (.158) since coming back … he misses GCL pitching
  • SS Ronald Torreyes: 1-3, 1 E (throwing) — played six innings in his first game since June 25th
  • PR-SS Diego Castillo: 1-1, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI
  • 2B Gleyber Torres: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 2 E (both fielding) — played the full nine innings … he’s on track to return Wednesday though I’m not sure what the plan is for tomorrow … I remember hearing about a DH game at some point, so maybe he’ll DH tomorrow and not play the field?
  • RF Isiah Gilliam: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • C Donny Sands: 0-4, 2 K, 1 PB
  • DH Hoy Jun Park: 0-4
  • 1B Steven Sensley: 2-4, 2 R, 1 K — had been in a 3-for-20 (.150) skid
  • RHP Nick Green: 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 14/2 GB/FB — 62 of 98 pitches were strikes (63%) … ground ball rate is up to a minor league leading 67.2%

Low-A Charleston RiverDogs (2-1 loss to Augusta)

  • 2B Wilkerman Garcia: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
  • SS Oswaldo Cabrera: 0-4, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • CF Leonardo Molina: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS
  • RHP Roansy Contreras: 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR, 4/6 GB/FB — 50 of 68 pitches were strikes (74%) … 18-year-old is just up from Staten Island after five excellent starts … 1.30 ERA and 36/9 K/BB in 36.2 innings … it’s only 36.2 innings, but he’s having a phenomenal season so far

The Short Season Staten Island Yankees had a scheduled off-day.

Rookie Pulaski Yankees (6-3 win over Bluefield)

  • SS Oswald Peraza: 1-5, 1 R, 1 K, 1 SB
  • CF Everson Pereira: 2-4, 1 R, 1 RBI — 23-for-63 (.365) in his last 15 games
  • 3B Nelson Gomez: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 E (fielding) — five homers in his last 18 games
  • RHP Pedro Barrios: 5 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HB, 2/6 GB/FB — 49 of 77 pitches were strikes (64%) … 28/7 K/BB in 35.2 innings for the 19-year-old
  • RHP Gilmael Troya: 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2/2 GB/FB — 32 of 48 pitches were strikes (67%)

Rookie GCL Yankees East (6-4 loss to GCL Braves)

  • CF Ryder Green: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB — this year’s third rounder is now hitting .190/.352/.333 through 16 games
  • LF Isaiah Pasteur: 0-4, 2 K
  • 1B Sandy Mota: 3-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI — single short of the cycle
  • RHP Anderson Munoz: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HB, 6/0 GB/FB — 19-year-old has a 22/16 K/BB in 20.1 innings
  • LHP Josh Maciejewski: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HR, 1/0 GB/FB — 17/3 K/BB in 13.2 innings for this year’s tenth rounder
  • RHP Barrett Loseke: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K3/0 GB/FB, 2 E (both throwing)

The Rookie GCL Yankees West were rained out again. They haven’t played a full game since last Thursday due to rain and off-days. This game will be made up as part of an August 1st doubleheader. Because of all the rainouts, they have three doubleheaders in three days from July 30th to August 1st.
